Folkworks-

Everyone is welcome through our doors

People come to our building for all sorts of reasons. Whatever brings you here we want you to enjoy your visit. So here’s what we’ve put in place to make everything as accessible as possible.

  • If you’d like to visit the venue before the event you’re attending for a “fam trip” our team will be happy to meet you. They’ll show you the concert hall you’ll be in during the performance, any other spaces you might need to see, and answer any questions you have.  We’ll need to check the spaces are available to view at the time you’re visiting, so give us a bit of notice to get it all booked in.
  • On the day of your concert, we can help you avoid queues and crowds by seating you before the rest of the audience
  • To help you find our venue we made some videos of the most popular routes which you can watch on this page. They include the route from Gateshead Metro station, Newcastle Central station, and from our carpark.
  • If you visit our building when it’s busy and want some space set back from the hustle and bustle, we’ll find you a quiet spot. We’re looking forward to having a dedicated Quiet Room soon. Stay tuned for more on that.
  • If the noise gets a bit much for you, ask one of our stewards or the Box Office team for the ear plugs or over-head ear defenders available for customers.

If there’s something not mentioned here that would help you enjoy your visit please just let us know.

  • Our Box Office, toilets, performance spaces, cafe, Brasserie and bars are accessible to all
  • You have various options for getting to our building by public transport  and we have step-free access
  • Our car park with lift access is right behind the building. We also have some priority spaces for blue badge holders near the entrances to The Glasshouse as well as in our car park.
  • Unisex baby changing facilities are available on every level of the building
  • Chestfeeding and breastfeeding parents are very welcome – in our cafe, the concourse or wherever you’re most comfortable
  • Dogs are welcome in the public areas of the building where our staff will be happy to point out dog-water stations. If you need to bring your assistance dog into a performance space, that’s fine too.
  • We have male and female designated toilet facilities on every level, and gender neutral toilets on our main Concourse level
  • There’s also a Changing Places toilet in house equipped with hoist*, changing table and shower

Electric hoist in accessible toilet currently out of order - temporary replacement available from 19 March

We wanted to give you a heads up that the electric hoist in our accessible toilet (located on level one, on the east side of the building) isn’t working at the moment. We totally understand how frustrating this can be, especially if you rely on it.

Our maintenance team is on it, but it might take a little time to get it fixed up properly. In the meantime, we have a portable Invacare Birdie Evo 150kg Compact Hoist available to use.

Your comfort and accessibility matter a lot to us, so we’re trying to find the best solution we can. If you’ve got any suggestions or specific needs, please reach out. We’re here to listen.

Thanks for bearing with us through this, and we’ll keep you posted on any updates.

Seating

  • Seats in Sage One are 46cm wide, and have fixed arm rests
  • Seats in Sage Two are 52cm wide. All seats have fixed arm rests, apart from the ones on level one of our central area. If you’re attending a show with cabaret style seating this may change, so give the team a call to double check.
  • There are lots of seating options across our front of house areas, from single chairs to booth style benches

If you’re attending an event in any other space and would like to check seat sizes please call us on 0191 443 4661.

Our programme and events

We programme a number of relaxed performances throughout the year. During these performances we:

  • Keep the house lights on during the show
  • Keep the hall doors open so people can come and go as they please
  • Warn of any loud noises
  • Remove intervals which can often confuse some audience members
  • Provide a chill out room near to the hall
