BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival 2019
Welcome to the Free Thinking Festival from BBC Radio 3. All weekend here at Sage Gateshead we’re gathering together a throng of talented individuals to wrestle, debate and celebrate the theme of this year’s festival: Emotion. Whether it’s the angry turn in contemporary politics, the cultural specificity of emotions, how film and tv teach us to feel, anxiety and the teenage brain, emotion in diplomacy, the benefits of sublimating feelings…..
There probably isn’t another art form that demonstrates the power of emotion more effectively than music – and Radio 3’s aim is to connect audiences with remarkable music and culture. Across the weekend we’ll be broadcasting live from our pop-up studio where you can hear an eclectic range of classical, jazz and world music brought to you by our team of presenters.
There are more than 50 sessions to choose from and as always tickets are free. Places are available on the day but be sure to book in advance so you can join us for an emotion-filled weekend.

– “Speed Date” the New Generation Thinkers. They present 10 × 60 second ideas. You vote for the best.
– Share your thoughts about the Festival theme Emotion on our Ideas Boxes.
– Tune into Slow Radio available on headphones. An antidote to today’s frenzied world. Listen to the sounds of birds, mountain climbing, monks chatting as you go about your day. A lo-fi celebration of pure sound.
– Discover strange and forgotten emotions from the past with the Lost Emotions Machine from Queen Mary University of London’s ‘Living With Feeling’ project.
– Share your emotions with students from the University of Sunderland’s Spark Radio.
For your information…
- Tickets are strictly limited to four per person.
- To guarantee your ticket book in advance. There will be some tickets available on the day on a first come, first served basis.
- Please take your seats 10 minutes prior to the event start time otherwise you may lose your place.
Due to the busy nature of this event we advise that you avoid bringing large bags where possible.
Guests bringing bags larger than an A3 piece of paper will need to check them in to the coats desk on the west side of the building (free of charge).
To ensure our customers safety we may conduct occasional security searches, which include searching your bag before entering the Halls.
