Home Alone: 10 Facts You Should Know

Home Alone follows the story of Kevin McCallister, a boy who is mistakenly left behind when his family flies to Paris for their Christmas vacation. Whilst he initially relishes being home alone, he soon has to content with two burglars. This Christmas, every gag, tumble and splash of aftershave will be accompanied live by Royal Northern Sinfonia. Ahead of the performance, here are 10 facts you never knew about the classic family film.

1. The role of Kevin was specifically written for child actor Macaulay Culkin.

However, this didn’t stop the creators auditioning hundreds of other young boys for the part. Macaulay’s younger brother Kieran also appeared in the fiilm – as his bed-wetting cousin Fuller.

2. Guinness World Record

Home Alone was the highest grossing film of 1990, and earned a Guinness World Record as the highest grossing live-action comedy ever written.

3. Love for Home Alone in Poland

Showings of Home Alone have become a Christmas tradition in Poland, and it is often the most watched show to air over the Christmas season. In 2010 the TV channel with production rights were going to scrap it from programming until a massive audience backlash convinced them to change their minds.

4. Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro was asked to play the role of Harry Lime. He turned down the offer and so the role was given to Joe Pesci.

5. Spider Scares

The tarantula placed on Marv’s face was a real spider. Not scary at all…

6. Long Days

John Candy, who played ‘Polka King of the Midwest’, Gus Polinski, shot all of his scenes in one day. However, it was a 23 hour day!

7. High house prices

In 2012, the Home Alone house was sold for $1.585 million. It is now an international tourist destination.

8. Dangerous Stunts

Macaulay Culkin’s stunt double was a 30 year old man. He can most famously be seen in the zipwire scene.

9. Movie Music Magic

The movie wasn’t always going to be scored by John Williams. Bruce Broughton (who did the score for Young Sherlock Holmes) was originally booked but his schedule was too busy.

10. Fighting Talk

The actress who played Megan (Kevin’s sister) eventually quit acting to practice judo. She then went on to represent the US at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.
