Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2018 Presents

Norma Winstone and Ralph Towner

Booking Information

Venue: Sage Two

Tickets: £17.50, £15.50 (Save with the Jazz Multibuy)

Multiple award winner Norma Winstone was born in London and first attracted attention in the late sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott’s club with Roland Kirk. Known initially for evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation, her extraordinary versatility means she is equally at home with standards repertoire, as well as performing with small groups, orchestras and big bands.

She continues in the forefront of British jazz and was nominated again in the 2007 and 2008 BBC Jazz Awards for best vocalist. She was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2007.

Ralph Towner is such an innovator on the modern musical landscape, his ideas ever fresh, though they span a career of more than forty years. Best known as the lead composer, guitarist, and keyboardist for the acoustic jazz ensemble ‘Oregon’, Towner has also had a rich and varied solo career that has seen fruitful and memorable musical collaboration with such great modern musicians as Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Egberto Gismonti, Larry Coryell, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, and Gary Peacock.

Ralph Towner came full circle with the 2017 release of “My Foolish Heart,” his 26th recording for ECM records, and an homage to the jazz pianist who inspired Towner on his original quest for compositional innovation, Bill Evans.

In this rare duo concert – Norma Winstone performs words set to some of Ralph Towner’s compositions alongside other material.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the pre-concert talk at 6pm will no longer take place.
