For 2019 Jazz North East are pleased to stage a series of 5 workshops hosted by established Duos working in the North East of England, focussing on different areas of jazz and improvisation.

Saturday 20 April

ABBIE FINN AND HARRY KEEBLE

Abbie and Harry have performed all over the country and with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) Academy big band in London. They perform as a duo focusing on improvised jazz and free music.

The workshop will be delving into jazz standards and how you can put your own spin on them, performing some of their arranged standards as well as their own compositions, and getting workshop participants to improvise and re-work standards. There will be particular focus on contemporary improvisation, conduction, road mapping tunes and how to perform effectively with other musicians.

This is a practical workshop aimed at instrumentalists aged 14+.

Harry Keeble is a saxophonist from the South-East of England. He started his undergraduate jazz degree at Leeds College of Music in 2016, and has since been actively involved in the Leeds and the North-Eastern jazz scene.

Abbie Finn is a drummer from the North-East of England. In 2017 she received a 1st class degree with honours in Music (Jazz) at Leeds College of Music and studied under Sebastiaan De Krom. She recently received a Master’s Degree from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. In 2018 Abbie performed on stage at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End as part of their prestigious Pinter at the Pinter season; where her playing was described as impeccable and vivifying.

Saturday 18 May

FAYE MACCALMAN AND JOHN POPE

This workshop will look at creatively arranging and improvising with songs from both within and outside of the jazz canon. The duo will also explore how they utilise their non-chordal duo to explore texture, space and dynamics.

They will also discuss how to combine freedom with composition and how these two can interlock, encouraging players to assert their own creative voice to any music they play.

Saturday 22 June

ZOE GILBY AND ANDY CHAMPION

In this group workshop Zoe and Andy will focus on listening, voicing, sounding and creating. The duo will work with the elements of improvised singing with the double bass focussing on melody, harmony, vocal percussion, lyrical composition in an atmosphere of safety and support.
