The Wilson Family were very honoured to be the latest recipients to have been awarded the EFDSS Gold Badge Award in October 2017.

The glorious, powerful, vocal harmony of The Wilson Family of Billingham, Teesside has rung out in folk clubs and festivals continuously for the last 40+ years. The Brothers sing Traditional and traditionally-orientated songs, with deep understanding, Joy and good humour.

The Young’uns have cemented their reputation at the forefront of the English folk scene in the last few years. Having taken their uplifting voices, powerful songs, spine tingling harmonies and raucous humour to audiences across the UK and around the world, they won the title of ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award in 2015 and 2016.

While folk music may commonly and affectionately be defined as low culture, The Unthanks aspire
to prove that the beauty and truth present in the oral history of the people, is anything but common. Using the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point, the influence of Miles Davis, Steve Reich, Sufjan Stevens, Robert Wyatt, Antony & The Johnsons, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in the band’s ten albums to date.

Their approach to storytelling makes easy bedfellows of polar opposites such as staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure, glacial minimalism and heartbreaking empathy. The Unthanks make Art Folk with a booming socially conscious heart, earning them an army of notable fans, including Martin Freeman, Elvis Costello, Colin Firth, Robert Wyatt, Mackenzie Crook, Ben Folds, Ryan Adams, Rosanne Cash, members of Portishead
